Important note!!!! You will need to use the textbook “African History through Sources: Volume 1. Colonial Contexts and Everyday Experiences” by Nancy J. Jacobs for all of your sources for this essay. If you don’t have that textbook available I can send you a link to an ebook version. In addition, this is due on the 14th, but it is only a 4% grade decrease for each day late, so I would rather the writer spend an extra day on the assignment than finish quickly with subpar results.
General Instructions: This is an open book, open note exam, raising the expectations for both the writing and the quality of the answers. When you use readings, you must cite those readings, or acknowledge the author and the title of the work (either using parenthetical citations or Chicago Manual of Style). If you are not directly quoting the readings, then you must summarize them in your own words. You should not use outside sources, and instead, should draw exclusively on the course materials.
Organization of the Exam: There are two parts: 1) short answer, 2) essay. You are to answer two short answer questions (one from each section), and one essay question.
Writing the Exam: Make sure to write the number of the question, so I know which questions you have chosen to answer. Lastly, check to make sure that you have offered complete answers for both sections. All answers should be in Times New Roman, size 12, double-spaced, with one-inch margins.
Short Answer (50 points). Answer two in total, one from each section (every individual answer is worth 25 points). Each answer should be about four to six sentences in length. Your answer should engage with the materials we have covered in class. Be as specific as possible, and choose persuasive evidence to support your point.
Part A: Concepts (answer one)
First, define what is a primary source. Then, name a few unconventional primary sources we used in this class, and lastly, explain why those sources are useful for historians studying Africa.
Define direct and indirect rule, and describe which colonial powers employed these different types of rule. Then, compare and contrast how Africans were affected by indirect versus direct rule.
Part B: Historical Events and Processes (answer one)
Explain the causes of the Mau Mau rebellion, and describe what occurred during the rebellion and subsequent State of Emergency in Kenya.
Choose to write about either the AIDS epidemic or the Rwandan genocide. Then, explain the historical event you chose, and describe what historical processes set off the epidemic or the genocide. How, in other words, does a broader historical context help us to understand these events?
Essay (50 points). Choose one prompt to answer. Your answer should be between four and six paragraphs in length. You must use specific evidence to support your answer. I want you to make a single, clear argument.
1.How does South African history differ from much of the rest of the continent? Provide concrete examples of what makes South African history unique, from 1652 until 1994. You must draw on specific evidence, from at least three sources, in order to make your case.
2. Describe some of the legacies of colonialism for independent Africa. How did the period of colonial rule shape African social, political, and economic life in the postcolonial era? You must provide at least three specific examples to support your argument.
A successful essay contains the following elements:
Clear, specific, thesis. Arguing that colonialism was bad is not a good thesis. How clear, unique, and persuasive is your thesis? Does your thesis lay out your argument, and is your argument original?
Organization. Think about what you are going to say before you begin writing. Your essay should flow logically. Each sentence should support the argument or a sub-argument, and because of this, it should be easy to follow.
Empirical details that support your argument.
Remember: avoid passive voice, overly wordy sentence constructions, and “to be” verbs.
The grading rubric for the essay follows closely from the above suggestions: insight/thesis (50%); demonstration using evidence (25%); and quality of writing (25%)
When you submit your final, it will go through Turnitin – a citation verification service that helps educators and students ensure that content in written documents is cited properly.
