TOPIC: On June 25 (2022), President Biden signed into law the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022. It is the first major legislation passed by the U.S. Congress in nearly 30 years that deals with firearms, colloquially known as “gun legislation.”
In FOUR pages, please discuss (1) What is this Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 all about? (2) Protagonists – Who argues in support of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and what are their arguments that this is good policy that will help Americans? (3) Antagonists – Who argues against the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and what are their arguments that this is bad policy and will not help, or maybe even hurt Americans? (4) Where do you stand regarding the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and why?
Each section should be a full page, thus all four sections should end up as FOUR full pages, plus a fifth page for citations/works cited.
The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is controversial because in the U.S., “gun legislation” evokes strong opinions on both sides of the issue. For some people, “gun legislation” is an automatic bad, without even knowing what’s it about. Others think it is an automatic good, also without necessarily knowing what it is about. I want you to make an honest effort to review the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to find out exactly what it does, and then decide “I like it” for these reasons, or “I don’t like it” for these reasons. Don’t just love it because some organization says it’s great, or hate it because some organization says it’s horrible.
Intellectual Freedom – I DO NOT CARE WHETHER YOU ARE A REPUBLICAN OR A DEMOCRAT, WHETHER YOU VOTED FOR TRUMP OR YOU VOTED FOR BIDEN. I am not grading your work based on any personal position you take. That is irrelevant to me. I am grading your paper based on factual accuracy and sufficiency of supporting evidence, and on the clarity of the articulation of your position and the quality of your argumentation defending your position.
I will not lie to you – I am an opinionated person, that’s why I majored in political science in the first place! But my personal opinions will have NO IMPACT on the grading of your paper. Grading will be based on the evidence you provide, and the logic of your arguments.
For the first section/Page 1: what’s the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act about, 2-3 key proposals, what they are supposed to do.
For the second section/Page 2: identify 2-3 protagonists, and for each one, discuss their arguments why they like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
For the third section/Page 3: identify 2-3 antagonists, and for each one, discuss their arguments why they don’t like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
For the fourth section/Page 4: Your position (like or dislike), and 2-3 reasons why you hold your position.
ONLY YOUR NAME AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE. First line – Your name. Second line – start your essay! Do NOT waste space with the date (I know when this assignment is due!), my name (I’ve known what my name is for decades!), the name of the course (I know what class we’re in!) Anything other than your name will consume precious space that you will need to adequately address each section, and if you include anything beyond your name at the top, your assignment will be assessed a -4 point (10%) penalty (because you’ll have already submitted less work with the lost space.) Some of you may wonder why I’m being such a scrooge about having no header. If I don’t lay this down thick, in the past, I’ve seen some ridiculous headers where half the page is gone! So name on line 1, your essay begins on line 2.
IN-TEXT CITATIONS ARE REQUIRED. This is a very current event so the candidates’ websites and news sources will be your best sources (e.g. LA Times, NY Times, Time Magazine, etc.) DO NOT JUST PROVIDE A LIST OF SOURCES AT THE END. You need to cite the candidates’ websites and news sources wherever you use them anywhere inside those four pages of the assignment. Citations must be proper and complete. If you do not know how to properly cite sources, please review your English 1A notes, or seek help from the Language Success Center. NO CITATIONS = 0-points for the assignment, JUST A LIST OF SOURCES AT THE END WITH NO CITATIONS IN ANY OF THE FIRST THREE SECTIONS = 0-points for the assignment. I apologize for the ALL CAPS, but I can’t emphasize enough that proper citations are absolutely required for any research work, even if it’s only four pages long.
