Writing will play an important role in this course. You will write a research paper on an
inequality issue in the United States. This written assignment has two main goals: (1) to help you think critically and integrate the sociological ideas and concepts with your readings and experiences; and (2) to allow you flexibility to pursue your own interests. Besides
comprehension and application, the higher learning activities required in the process of writing such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation are the crucial elements of critical thinking. By completing this assignment, you will have a clear picture of social inequality and how it affects us.Your assignment should be at least 750 words long (typed, double-spaced, using 1-inch margins, and 12-point font size) for undergraduates and 1,500 words long for graduate students with a descriptive title. Your paper should adhere to appropriate standards of organization, spelling, and grammar; that is, it should be formatted in complete sentences and paragraphs. Avoid even the hint of plagiarism: All ideas borrowed from the text should be appropriately cited. You must submit your paper on time to receive the full credits. Late work may be accepted, but there with be heavy penalties. Grading is primarily based on four criteria: 1) Depth of Subject: ▪Demonstrate a thorough understanding of major concepts, theories, arguments, or issues; ▪Support arguments with evidence, illustrations, or examples. 2) Organization: ▪Avoid tangential material that detracts from central focus; ▪Provide clear transitions between and within sections of paper.
3) Clarity of Expression: ▪Use clear, concise, and logical sentences; ▪Avoid spelling,
punctuation, grammatical errors. 4) Style and Fulfilment of Requirement: ▪Adhere to the instructions of the assignment and fulfil the requirements of the assignment (e.g., length, citations, references); ▪Avoid any hints of plagiarism. A. Choosing a Topic
You can choose any current inequality issue. For example, COVID-19 has disproportionately affected marginalized groups and inequality could spread it faster. During the course, we may also find a certain topic particularly interesting and relevant, or you may have an interest that you would like to pursue and learn more about. Examples of the research topic include inequality in parental investment in child-rearing, inequality in early childhood education, inequality in health, inequality in political participation, economic inequality and crime, economic inequality and the severity of punishment, and US black-white wealth inequality. The research topic should be relevant and of scholarly significance. You may choose any inequality issue that is most interest to you, but you must frame it as a social issue for in-depth investigation, and investigate it in light of concepts and theories you have learned in the lecture, the textbook, and the readings.
B. Conducting Library Research
This assignment requires that you do some type of library research on your topic. You must use at least three scholarly articles or books. If you meet this minimum requirement for references, then you can freely use other sources.
C. Organizing the Paper. When you organize your paper, consider the following guidelines. In the introductory paragraph, indicate what your topic is and why it is so important. As a way of highlighting the importance of the social issue you choose, cite the statistical information of the trends or magnitude of the problem if that is available. Define, if necessary, any unfamiliar concepts that are central to your topic. If your topic involves a controversial issue, give some background information on it. Cut off the tangential materials and focus on the most important things you find out or learn
about your topic. Make connections between your findings and the concepts and theories of social inequality. Conclude with a restatement of your main findings, personal views or predictions on the matter.
D. Format and Style
You must use the APA format when you cite the references in the text and then list them under
