In the second lecture of this class, we heard about those themes most common in Digital Art, and how they are born out of the character of the age we live in—The Digital Age.
As we know, the TV series Black Mirror is devoted to some of those themes: 1) How we take for granted the digital setting in which we live, as if it is natural and true. 2) Digital media is very slippery and its influences are hard to pin down—it weaves in and out of your consciousness, sometimes seen, sometimes unseen. 3) It is slippery in a whole other way—it is hard to tell what in a Digital world is real or fake, and whether that even matters. Does it matter that your idol is not actually real—that that person in real life is very different to the media image? Is there a moral danger in accepting the surface of things as real, as true? Or is that all there ever is, a surface we see, and we shouldn’t bother ourselves with what might be behind it.
I know what I think. What do you think? What are some of the other ways in which you related to the episode “Fifteen Million Merits”? Here are some possible ideas to consider:
Does the Digital Age ever bother you morally? Is it hard to keep your moral compass in the Digital World?
Do you see a difference between your digital identity (Facebook or Twitter personality and presentation) and your true self? If so, what are the differences?
Do you think the World of Digital Media (TV, Internet, Social Media, Music) is a free form reality, impossible to contain or control—or do you think it is being “curated” or served to you by a powerful entity? Are we shaping our culture as free thinkers or is it possible there are social media Bots manipulating our cultural movements?
Lots of people think that the accessibility and limitless size of the digital universe equalizes different social identities and the opportunities each has available to them. They cite the “Black Lives Matter” uprising and “Arab Spring” as evidence. Do you agree? Does the virtual space of the internet equalize our identities and opportunities?
Remember, you will have an opinion on these ideas, but so does “Fifteen Million Merits”. You should be able to tell me what the creators of the episode thought, and whether you agree or disagree. Always support your ideas with examples, from the episode as well as from your life.
ALSO, THE ABOVE IDEAS ARE NOT A QUESTIONNAIRE! Do not go through them answering them one by one and think you wrote me a college-level paper. I pose those questions merely as inspiration for your own thoughts. Even though this is an art class, I expect college-level writing with a THESIS and an ORGANIZED STRUCTURE around that thesis. Please see my guide to writing an organized paper here: How to write an ORGANIZED PAPER with an OUTLINE. It is mandatory viewing for this class.
In the writing assignment you hand me, I should clearly see the logic of a thesis and an outline. BUT YOU DO NOT HAND IN AN OUTLINE. I want a final essay that used an outline in the writing process.
Also, HAVE A NOTEBOOK TO DASH DOWN IDEAS WHILE WATCHING THE SHOW! Use the pause button. Write ideas down. In this module, I have included the ideas that I might write down if I were doing this assignment: $WIKI_REFERENCE$/pages/professors-15-million-merits-notes-and-possible-thesis?module_item_id=g614f5eb778b013be06b20c118d12cd2d
