Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to demonstrate your understanding of the characteristics of the DNP-prepared nurse and the skills inherent to your future role as a DNP-prepared nurse. The Global Burden of Disease drives the work of the DNP-prepared nurse as the consummate consumer of research. You will work to find solutions through iterative searching of evidence to address pressing issues.
Instructions
Share your views on the unique characteristics of the DNP-prepared nurse.
The Global Burden of Disease and National Practice Problems are the focus of your ongoing work as a DNP-prepared nurse. The National Practice Problems are multifaceted and complex in nature. As you consider one of these complex practice problems, explain which of them would you consider examining and why. Remember to keep a limited scope of a problem you would consider working on with the interprofessional team.
Provide key points on why recently published research studies supply the solutions to the practice problem you are considering.
This discussion enables the student to meet the following program competencies:
Integrates scientific underpinnings into everyday clinical practice. (POs 3, 5)
Uses analytic methods to translate critically appraised research and other evidence into clinical scholarship for innovative practice improvements. (POs 3, 5)
Appraises current information systems and technologies to improve healthcare. (POs 6, 7)
Analyzes healthcare policies to advocate for equitable healthcare and social justice to all populations and those at risk due to social determinants of health. (POs 2, 9)
Creates a supportive organizational culture for flourishing collaborative teams to facilitate clinical disease prevention and promote population health at all system levels. (PO 8)
Translates a synthesis of research and population data to support preventative care and improve the nation’s health. (PO 1)
Leads others in professional identity, advanced clinical judgment, systems thinking, resilience, and accountability in selecting, implementing, and evaluating clinical care. (POs 1, 4)
Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
Appraise the role of the DNP-prepared nurse in leading collaborative teams across the diverse healthcare system. (PCs 4, 5, 6, 7, 8; POs 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9)
Appraise global healthcare practice problems and DNP practice relevant to advanced nursing practice. (PCs 1, 3, 5, 7, 8; POs 1, 3, 9)
PROFESSOR EXPLAINING DISCUSSION
Welcome to the Week 2 discussion! This week’s discussion asks you to demonstrate your understanding of the characteristics of the DNP-prepared nurse and the skills inherent to your future role as a DNP-prepared nurse. The Global Burden of Disease drives the work of the DNP-prepared nurse as the consummate consumer of research. The National Practice Problems are multifaceted and complex in nature. As you consider one of these complex practice problems, explain which of them would you consider examining and why. Also pursuant to the directions, remember to keep a limited scope of a problem you would consider working on with the interprofessional team at the local level. Finally, please provide key points on why recently published research studies supply the solutions to the practice problem you are considering. This is going to be a great week as we explore our understanding of the very important DNP role and the many opportunities available with the practice doctorate. There are some very significant contributions that the DNP expert provides as a translational scientist and I look forward to reading about your thoughts on that. We are also going to delve into the Global Burden of Disease and specifically consider the eight national health burdens which are currently impacting the health of Americans. Think about one of these that you are interested in exploring for this course. Remember that you are not locked in to this topic regarding your final DNP project next year; you will only be using your selected health burden as a means to learn how to locate and appraise both quantitative and qualitative studies (during Weeks 3-5) using the John Hopkins Tools during this class and for your upcoming NR-716 course. So exciting! As you pick your national health burden of interest this week, be sure to narrow it down a bit which will assist you with your first article search for Week 3. For example, if you are interested in diabetes, think about what aspects of that you could focus on such as: adult onset, pediatric/adolescent, gestational, etc. Please let me know if you need assistance with narrowing the topic of the national health burden as I am happy to help. For this week however, take some time to explore the problems associated with your selected national burden. Review the websites of national organizations such as the CDC, NIH, U.S. Department of Health, the American Diabetes Association, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, etc., and learn what they are saying about the current issues. You will find the statistics in many of these areas to be alarming. Then, think about how the selected national health burden is affecting your own community and local health care systems. Feel free to discuss what you are seeing as professionals. Consider too how the scientific literature may provide evidence-based interventions as solutions to address some of the factors associated with the national health burden and what that means for DNP experts.
