ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Purpose: The purpose of the personal reflection assignments is to apply the goals of psychology (describe, explain, predict, and change) to your own behaviors. In addition, you will demonstrate your ability to apply concepts from our course to various situations. There will be four reflection assignments throughout the semester.
Task: Think of a behavior of your own that you are comfortable writing about for class. The behavior should be something you are interested in changing. Make sure it is an observable behavior (e.g., I turn down invitations to go out with others) and not a trait or aspect of your personality (e.g., I am shy). In this assignment, you will explain where it came from and suggest changes you can make in the future by applying concepts from Chapters 7, 8, and 9. All answers should be in full sentences.
Paragraph 1 (Behavior): Describe the behavior by identifying what it is and then giving two specific examples of it happening in your daily life. Put the behavior in bold font. Specific examples are actual instances of it happening rather than general descriptions. For example, saying “I often leave dishes in the sink” is general and vague while saying, “Last week I didn’t wash a single dish and on Saturday I had a sink full of dishes that made my kitchen smell” is specific. Remember you need two specific examples of the behavior.
Paragraph 2 (Motivation): Apply at least two vocabulary terms/concepts from Chapter 7 – Motivation and Emotion explaining why you engage in this behavior. Select vocabulary terms from the list below. Vocabulary terms must be in bold font to count for credit. Each term must be first defined in your own words and then applied to the situation by identifying how that concept explains why you engage in the behavior.
reinforcement
punishment
quality and quantity
sympathetic nervous system
Yerkes-Dodson arousal curve
arousal homeostasis
classical conditioning
operant conditioning
incentives
novelty
affiliation
achievement
competence
extrinsic motivation
intrinsic motivation
self-determination theory
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Paragraph 3 (Personality): Choose ONE theory of personality from Chapter 8 (e.g., Trait, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, or Social Cognitive). Discuss how that theory would explain why you engage in that behavior. Incorporate at least three vocabulary terms/concepts from the theory in your explanation. Vocabulary terms must be in bold font and defined in your own words to count for credit. The name of the theory will not count as one of the vocabulary terms. You must incorporate more detailed vocabulary terms from the section rather than just the broad term.
Paragraph 4 (Stress and Health): Identify at least two coping methods from Chapter 9 – Stress and Health that you could use to improve the situation/behavior you are discussing and explain. Describe the coping method in your own words and explain how you could apply it to change your behavior. Vocabulary terms must be in bold font to count for credit.
Criteria: You will be successful in this activity if you
Provide a clear description of your selected behavior including two examples of it using full sentences, appropriate grammar, and correct punctuation.
Incorporate relevant vocabulary terms, marked in bold font, in each response. Vocab terms should be defined in your own words and applied to the situation.
Demonstrate the ability to describe, explain, and change behavior based on material from the chapters.
Submit either a word doc (.doc or .docx) or a .pdf file. Alternatively, you may copy and paste a response into the textbox. Do not attach a Google doc. or a .pages file.
Late policy – This assignment will accept submissions as on time until 11:59 pm on Monday, April 10. Late submissions will receive a 2-point deduction per day past the deadline unless you choose to apply your one-time extension pass. If you choose to apply the 3-day extension pass, add a comment to your submission indicating that you are using the pass and submit the paper by 11:59 pm on Thursday, April 13.  HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT ( EXAMPLE ESSAY/ DRAFT)

As a psychology major, I’ve decided to think about my propensity for putting things off. By delaying crucial activities until the very last minute, this practice leads to unneeded stress and lost productivity. Waiting until the night before a paper is due to begin writing it and waiting until the day of an exam to complete all of the required studying are two examples of this practice in my daily life.

Two ideas from Chapter 7 – Motivation and Emotion – can be used to describe the motivation for my procrastinating habit. The drive for achievement, often known as the desire to complete difficult tasks and reach objectives, is the initial idea.
