I have learned important skills and significant insights from this semester that will influence how I practice nursing. I will list my top three takeaways, explain how they apply to my nursing profession, and recollect my favorite and least favorite assignments in this reflection paper.
This semester, Chapter 11, which concentrated on strengthening nursing judgment through critical thinking, taught me the first and most significant lesson. I now understand that the ability to think critically is crucial for nurses because it enables us to make wiser decisions and give patients the best care possible. As a nurse, it is my responsibility to examine patient data, spot issues, and create a plan of care that is tailored to each patient’s need. By enhancing my competence and productivity as a nurse, I think this skill will affect how I practice nursing.
The second lesson, which was as crucial, came from Chapter 12 and had to do with cooperation and communication. I now realize that good communication is essential for protecting patient safety and enhancing patient outcomes because I work as a nurse. I have improved my ability to actively listen, inquire, and communicate with patients and other healthcare professionals using simple, plain terms. Nursing practice requires collaboration because it improves patient outcomes and fosters continuity of care. This course will influence my nursing career by enhancing my ability to work well in a team setting and deliver top-notch patient care.
The final thing I took away from Chapter 15’s discussion of nurse political involvement was this. Although I didn’t particularly enjoy this chapter, I now see how crucial it is for nurses to get involved in politics to fight for the rights of their patients. The policies governing healthcare and how they affect patient care must be understood by nurses. By increasing my awareness of the political landscape around healthcare and how it influences patient care, this class will have an impact on my nursing practice.
My favorite assignment was the clinical simulation. I was able to practice and develop my nursing abilities with this project in a secure setting. It also assisted me in developing my critical thinking ability and self-confidence. The literature review was the assignment I disliked the least. This task was time-consuming and difficult for me. But it did teach me the value of using evidence-based practice in nursing and how to find trustworthy information sources.
I should say that this semester has opened my eyes. I have picked up crucial lessons that will influence how I practice nursing. I now recognize the value of political activism, collaboration, good communication, and critical thinking. The clinical simulation assignment was also my favorite, however, the literature review was my least favorite. Overall, I’m appreciative of the chance to develop as a nurse and look forward to using what I’ve learned in my future nursing practice.
