You have designed a foreign aid project to address your chosen topic. You have convinced other actors in the United States government to support you. (ATTACHED BELOW) Now, you must convince the leadership in your partner country. This means writing a letter (3-5 pages double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman) outlining your reasons for developing the project and how cooperation will benefit the leader and population.
When reaching out to the government, there are a few factors you must take into account:
Regime Type: Was the leader democratically elected? If so, you might want to explain how the project will appeal to his constituent base or improve the livelihood of the population. If the leader has authoritarian power, you might explain how the project will help his career/legacy in other ways.
Geopolitical Situation: Is the partner country aligned with, or dependent on, any foreign powers? If so, you might consider how the project will impact this alignment or dependence.
Economic/Social Problems: Are there any pressing problems that have been plaguing the government or population? Consider how your project will help with some of those problems.
Relationship with the United States: If nothing else, you can explain how the government’s cooperation will improve and strengthen its relationship with the United States. This is your chance to describe the support that you have received from other partners within the US government. How will the leader benefit from stronger ties with the US?
Assessment: You will be graded on three components. First, we will consider the extent to which you considered the aspects described above (5/15 points). Second, we will consider the quality of your writing, especially your ability to concisely and convincingly summarize the required project components (4/15 points). Third, we will take into account your compliance with assignment guidelines and requirements (3/15 points). Finally, you will be graded on your preparation for the five-to-ten-minute presentation (3/15 points).
