ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
In class on Wednesday, you generated a Word Cloud from one of your own social media accounts. Drawing both from this week’s reading “Generation Amazing!!” and the audience analysis work we have been doing in class, choose one of the prompt options.
I recommend utilizing both of the Word Cloud generators linked below: the one we used in the class makes it easier to download and share an image. The second one provides much better tools for your analysis, but it is fussy to download a good image for sharing.

In your response posts this week, share what you found most interesting about a classmate’s analysis, or let them know if you see other explanations or possibilities for the data they shared.
OPTION ONE:
1) Upload an image of the Word Cloud you generated from your own social media account. Analyze your results. Was it what you expected to see? Did anything surprise you? What does the Word Cloud communicate about your attitudes, ambitions, interests, demographics, or larger social issues? What specific audience do you think you communicate with most? Does the language you use most often reflect the interests or attitudes of the people you want to reach?
2) Select a public figure you respect and follow, and generate a Word Cloud from one of their social media accounts. Upload the image and analyze it: Do you have any language or interests in common? Did anything surprise you? And again, what does their Word Cloud communicate about their attitudes, ambitions, interests, demographics, or larger social issues?
OPTION TWO:
1) Select two public media accounts that would be meaningful to compare and contrast, and choose a particular period or event to serve as your text sample. Share what you selected and why, then generate and upload two Word Clouds for analysis. Are there interesting differences or similarities in the language they use most often? What do those similarities or differences indicate about the issue or the audience you are analyzing? Is there evidence of major ideological or cultural differences between them?
Helpful Tips: If you are analyzing social media feeds, you can often use the Advanced Search feature to isolate particular accounts and date ranges. Major news outlets also have several advanced search features to help you locate and collect your sample.
Just a Few Possible Examples:
-the Twitter feeds of two political candidates who were running for the same office in the month leading up to that election
-the Twitter feeds of Elon Musk (founder of SpaceX) and Blue Origin (founded by Jeff Bezos) in July 2021, when Jeff Bezos took his first crewed ride into space
-news articles from Fox News and CNN about a polarizing or complex event
-the content around a famous feud between celebrities on Twitter
-Youtube comments on two music videos from different genres that both surpassed 1 Billion views in 2022 (https://www.billboard.com/lists/youtube-billion-vi…
)
-tweets using hashtags with contrasting information or viewpoints, such as TakeAKnee vs BoycottNFL, NotAllMen vs YesAllWomen, 1reasonwhy vs 1reasontobe, etc.
HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE ESSAY / DRAFT)
As a technique for understanding people’s opinions, interests, and demographics, word clouds have gained popularity in the analysis of language usage in social media and among public personalities. I’ll concentrate on Option One of our class assignment in this essay, where we created a Word Cloud using data from one of our social media accounts and evaluated the outcomes.
I submitted a Word Cloud image from one of my social media accounts to the Word Cloud generator and examined the results. The words that were used the most frequently were those that were associated with my particular hobbies, such as food, travel, and music, so this did not surprise me. But I was shocked to notice that other terms connected to social themes, like equality and justice, also dominated my Word Cloud. This shows that I discuss social topics on my social media account rather frequently.
My Word Cloud showed that I speak with a wide audience in terms of demographics. The words I most frequently employ, which contain a mixture of friends, family, coworkers, and acquaintances, reflect the interests and attitudes of the people I want to influence.
Furthermore, my study revealed that my Word Cloud effectively conveys my aspirations for the future. My positive view on life and eagerness to do new things is reflected in the words with larger fonts, such as adventure, love, and happiness.
I choose a famous person I respect and follow for Option Two of the topic, and I created a Word Cloud from one of their social media accounts. I discovered certain similarities in the language and hobbies after analyzing the Word Cloud, which was to be expected given that I follow them for a reason. I was quite aback to notice that they also included some socially conscious vocabulary, demonstrating their awareness of societal issues.
In conclusion, word cloud analysis can be a beneficial method for learning more about the speech patterns and mindsets of public personalities and social media users. It can give us insights into broader social issues as well as their interests, goals, and demographics.
