The purpose of this assignment is to provide analytical evidence that a chosen health disparity exists, then present strategies for eliminating or reducing it. Your paper should provide an overview of the specific health disparity (health status and/or health care disparity), an explanation as to why the disparity appears to exist or not, and suggest strategies at the individual, community, and organizational levels that could be undertaken to reduce or eliminate the health disparity. The proposed strategies should target the most significant factors contributing to the target health disparity.
The paper should be a minimum of 5 pages and no more than 7 pages excluding the title and reference pages. Use APA scholarly writing guidelines in the paper including Times New Roman, 12-point font, and double spacing.
Document the health disparity (based on published evidence). You will need to perform a search of information using reliable published articles (see databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and another available library database) and the websites of reputable organizations (e.g., NIH, CDC, WHO, PAHO, WHO, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, American Lung Association, etc.) to locate the most up‐to‐date statistics available (2016 or later) on the prevalence/incidence of the health disparity and other information on its severity or impact. The statistics that you present on the specific health disparity should be compared with that reported for the general U.S. population, a specific reference group (e.g., “white” persons), or both.
Overview of the causes of the target health disparity (based on published evidence). Outline possible environmental, structural, social, cultural, or behavioral causes that might have been historically responsible for the health disparity and those that are responsible for maintaining it in current times.
Identify specific causes that you think should be targeted for intervention (based on published evidence). Based on your research, identify the major factor(s) that you believe are at the root of the health disparity in question and that you suggest should be targeted to reduce or eliminate the disparity in health status and/or health care.
Discuss major issues that need to be considered when developing specific health disparity interventions. Discuss some of the major issues which need to be considered (e.g., improving health literacy, cultural competency, improved health care access, health education, etc.) to be able to develop effective strategies to reduce or eliminate the disparity in health status for the selected ethnic group. Need to think about which ones would give the “biggest bang for the buck” and which would be most sustainable.
Describe the strategy(s) that you propose to reduce or eliminate the specific health disparity. Based on the evidence, describe in detail strategies at the policy, community, organizational, and/or individual levels that should receive greater funding priority. You must explain the reason(s) why you selected these particular strategies and if there is any evidence for their effectiveness for this or similar target groups. This should be as evidence‐based as possible.
Discuss potential threats to strategy implementation. Finally, discuss the challenges that you anticipate would occur in implementing the proposed strategy(s) to reduce or eliminate the target health disparity.
References (you should use a minimum of 6 references and these should be from peer‐reviewed journals; no more than 20% can be from reputable websites such as the CDC, WHO, PAHO, AMA, or similar sources). Citations from Wikipedia and low‐quality web sources are not allowed.

Health disparities are variations in the state of health between various groups of individuals. Numerous factors, including financial class, access to healthcare, and race and ethnicity, might be blamed for these discrepancies. This essay’s goal is to propose ideas for lowering or eliminating a selected health disparity and to analyze the evidence supporting those strategies. The essay will give a general review of health inequality, explain its root causes, and recommend actions that can be taken to lessen or end it.

Keeping Track of Health Disparities

The difference in cardiovascular disease (CVD) between African Americans and White Americans has been selected as the topic for this article. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), both African Americans and White Americans die more frequently from CVD. However, compared to White Americans, African Americans have greater rates of CVD death and are more likely to acquire CVD at a younger age.

Potential Root Causes of the Health Gap

The CVD difference between African Americans and White Americans may be caused by several causes. Socioeconomic status is one potential factor. African Americans are more likely to experience poverty, which may have an impact on their ability to get healthcare, receive a high-quality education, and find jobs. African Americans may also be more vulnerable to environmental stressors like prejudice, which can cause chronic stress and aid in the onset of CVD.

Access to healthcare is another factor that may be contributing to health inequality. African Americans are less likely to have access to high-quality healthcare facilities and are also less likely to have health insurance. Poorer results can occur from CVD treatment that is delayed or ineffective.

Specific Interventions

Several targeted interventions can be used to lessen or eliminate the CVD discrepancy between African Americans and White Americans. These interventions can be put into practice at the level of the individual, the community, the organization, and the policy.

Interventions can be directed toward improving African Americans’ health literacy on an individual basis. This can be done by participating in health education programs that emphasize lifestyle changes like regular exercise and a balanced diet. To ensure that they give culturally competent treatment to African American patients, healthcare providers can also take cultural competency training.

The development of community-based programs can be used as an intervention at the community level to increase access to healthy food options and promote physical activity. Community health professionals can also be hired to go out to African American communities and offer health education.

Interventions at the organizational level may involve putting plans in place to broaden the diversity of healthcare professionals. Offering financial aid and mentoring initiatives to African American students interested in a healthcare career is one way to do this. Additionally, healthcare companies can put rules in place to guarantee that all patients, regardless of race or ethnicity, receive high-quality care.

Implementing measures to improve African Americans’ access to healthcare is one example of policy action. This may entail raising financing for community health clinics, extending the eligibility for Medicaid, and putting policies into place to boost health insurance coverage.

Threats to the Implementation of the Strategy

The execution of these focused actions could be threatened in several ways. Healthcare professionals’ reluctance to cultural competency training or policies designed to promote diversity is one possible hazard. Additionally, there may be a lack of money for these interventions as well as hostility to laws that would give African Americans more access to healthcare.

Targeted interventions at the individual, community, organizational, and policy levels can be used to address the large health gap in CVD between African Americans and White Americans. African Americans’ health outcomes can be improved and the discrepancy can be lessened or eliminated thanks to these interventions. To ensure the success of these interventions, it is crucial to address any threats that may arise during the execution of these strategies.
