HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE ESSAY / DRAFT)
I’ve decided to research “The Hayes Code” and its effects on Hollywood for my final report this semester. I’ve always been interested in the history of censorship in the film industry as a mass media student, and the Hayes Code was an important breakthrough in this field. The code was a set of censorship standards applied to Hollywood movies between 1930 and 1968. The code established restrictions on how sex, violence, and morality were to be portrayed in movies. I think that learning more about the Hayes Code and how it affected Hollywood will help me better understand the history of censorship in the media as well as the political, social, and cultural forces that shaped its creation.
I want to understand the historical background of the Hayes Code, the justifications for its enforcement, and how it affected the movie business. I’m interested in learning how directors created films that were both commercially and culturally successful while adhering to the code. I also want to know how the code affected how women, minorities, and contentious topics were portrayed in Hollywood movies. Overall, I think that learning about the Hayes Code will help me have a better grasp of the social and cultural influences on mass media production and consumption.
The learning objectives of this course are in line with my proposed topic, especially those that pertain to comprehending the historical, social, and cultural background of mass media. I will be able to explore how cultural, social, and political variables shaped the creation of mass media by looking at the Hayes Code and its effects on Hollywood. This subject also fits with the goal of the course, which is to improve students’ analytical and critical thinking abilities in the area of mass communication.
